The Bergen railway

Finse station is highest station on the Bergen railway, at 1222 metres above sea level. The Norwegian Parliament decided in 1898 to build a railway line between Bergen and the eastern part of the country, this project was one of the most challenging railway projects in Europe at the time, also since the line was going to be built across the roadless Hardangervidda mountain plain.
Before the actual railway building could start, a supply road had to be built across the mountain, the so-called Rallarvegen or the Navvie's road.
The Bergen line was opened by King Haakon of Norway 27th November 1909. Today the supply road is mainly used by bicyclists during summer, although the part between Haugastøl and Finse is still used as a supply road for Norwegian Rail.
Since the line was first opened in 1909, extensive modifications to the original track has been put in, in particular during the last 20 years. The tunnel to the west of Finse was opened during 1998 and eliminated 16 kilometers of rail crossing the plain west of Finse, this together with protection covers against snow during winter (snow protection also was the main argument for building the Finse tunnel) has effectively closed much of the scenery between Myrdal and Finse, unfortunately little can be seen from the train after the tunnel opened.
From the scenic point of view this is a pity, and it has in my opinion reduced the value of the Bergen railway a lot as a tourist train, the benefit is of course that the regularity of the train has improved a lot since the tunnel opened. However, in order to experience the mountain scenery and also get an impression of the magnificent eengineering and the work that went into building the original line, one today has to walk or to bicycle the old Rallarvegen supply road.

The best parts are not able to be seen. Many tour companies here have given up on Norway as a result.So have I!
