3rd July; N44°10 E5°17; Mont Ventoux, been to the mountain top....

Tue, Jul 3, 2001; by Inge Johannessen.

back to Aix finish - back to on the road

The weather was good.

thewayup: on the way up to Mont Ventoux, about 4 kilometres from the top on the Sault side

No wind this morning at 6AM. Drove from Salon de Provence to Sault, arrived at about 7:45, and was ready for an attempt at the mountain around 8AM. Got fresh supplies of mineral water and pain chocolate and pain with raisins from the local boulangerie, and set off.

Beautiful day, as mentioned no wind, and at least at 8AM in the morning rather cool. Obviously the day for it, if ever.

The distance from Sault to the top is 26 kilometres, with a climb from 710 meters above sea level to 1912 at the top. On average a rise of about 5 meters for every 100 meters on the road. Averages do not tell the whole story however; the last 6 kilometres climb about 600 meters, or 10 meters for every 100 meters of road.

Those last six kilometres start where the road coming up from Bedoin joins the road from Sault. There is a large restaurant located there, the place to stop obviously and spend a major part of the day, at least for riders with some understanding of what is involved in tackling the last 6 km up to the top. Since I am the eternal optimist I thought there was no reason for stopping and pushed on.

Those last 6 kilometres took me at least 45 minutes. It was hard work. I was passed by more bicyclists than I care to remember. All kinds of bicyclists, young men, young women, older men, maybe not by any older woman, but it is hard to tell. I was busier taking photographs mainly in order to have an excuse to stop, than to closely observe who passed me on bikes.

atthemountaintop: I have been at Mount Ventoux and I have seen ......

Well I arrived eventually. Took photographs in all directions,

fromtoptowardsSault: from the top. The view towards Sault and the radar station at the top

and got on the bike again and was back in Sault in less than one hour.

fromtoptowardsMalaucene: from the top, view towards Malaucene and the west

I also stopped at the Tom Simpson memorial on my way back; the tradition is for cyclists to stop and honour Simpson by leaving something.

tomsimpson: the memorial. It looks like a garbage dump to me. Sorry for the light, no way the letters can be read.

As a result the place looks like a garbage dump. What kind of honour is it to have things looking like this?

Came back to Sault at around 12:30, after 3.5 hours on the road and about 30 minutes at the top. What happened to the rest of that time I have no idea. Maybe it was taken up by stopping for photographs (as an excuse).

As you can see it was a fine day.

back to Aix finish - back to on the road

A few of us went to the pyrenees this year and did the following:-

Soulour
Hautacam
Tourmalet (Twice)
aspin - plad a det - aspin (met Armstrong training and Jan Ullrich - see the Swindon-rc website).
Mont Ventoux - Long drive but well worth it. It was lovely weather - descended in normal cycling gear - so different from 2004 when it was freezing.
Luz Ardiden

We are doing the Alps next year and Mont Ventoux again. Looking forward to it.

I'm just back from Provence and enjoyed several days cycling in beautiful sunshine every day. Much better than back home in Northumberland!
I was delighted to make the summit of Ventoux in 1hr51secs from Bedoin.
The last 6km are really hard with the freezing wind sapping your strength with every turn of the crank.
What a view from the top!
You've just got to give it a go!

Had fun reading about your trip, especially Ventoux. I've had two Ventoux encounters in the past few years, the first of which wasn't exactly a good time!

Hope you're still having fun on your bike. France is certainly a great place to ride!

Looks interesting. I never climb over 100m, but now I see why most bicycles have that 3rd set of gears. :-)

I want to climb it some time, because I love this mountain when I first see it on Tour de France!
Good pictures!

Enjoyed the read. Congratulations.

A friend and I are hpoing to conquer Mt Ventoux later this year following a ride from the Pyrenees to Santiago de Compostela. Mt Ventoux is on our list of things to do on the way home! We are very amateur cyclists but still respect the legendary status of Mt Ventoux.

What is are the things you liked best about Mt. Ventoux and the things you liked least?

What is the best peice of advice you can give us?

Really enjoyed your article. I cycled Ventoux some years ago to pay homage to Tom Simpson.

Congratulations! Am planning on making the ride up there next year, and can only hope that I'll get such great weather, too! - And am, of course, insanely jealous. :)

Best regards, and safe riding.

Thanks for the great pictures!

Done it myself on 28th August, starting from

Bédoin. By this side, you appreciate the first

kms

after Chalet Reynard as you can find some rest

compared with what you struggled with in the

forest before ;-)

Mt Ventoux is definitely "a must"...

Cool! Would have been disappointed if you hadn't done this.

Great picture of the climb. The ride down must be pretty exciting.

Fantastic, Inge!!

Congratulations. I'm a jealous guy now. I want to tackle that mountain myself some time... you'll be the first to know it.

Have a good time in Provence for the next few days and I wish you a pleasant return to Norway.
